Motor technologies

In the field of electric motors, there are many new and even revolutionary developments. Still new in the market is the synchronous reluctance motor. It should be more widespread due to its advantages.
Truly new and at the same time revolutionary is the Torque Motor from EMF. Based on an intelligent magnet arrangement on the shaft, this forms a loss-free and backlash-free gear function in conjunction with the stator winding. In other words, a gearmotor without a dear. Sounds crazy, but it works. You can learn more about the two motor technologies below.

The rotary motion of an electric motor is based on two principles, the Lorenz force and the reluctance force. The former is well known in practice, the latter, although it has advantages (especially compared to asynchronous motors), less so. However, the principle of reluctance force should play a greater role in motors in the future, especially where they show their strengths.   Reluctance motors make use of the forces exerted on iron bodies in the magnetic field. Thus, only current-carrying windings are used (as any standard three-phase motor has) and a (soft) iron body on which the intended force acts (this simple principle offers price and technical advantages). The reluctance force now acts in such a way that the moving part takes up the position in which (with the current kept constant) the magnetic field is greatest. In other words, the magnetic resistance (= reluctance) is the smallest.
Synchronous reluctance motors are interesting for applications because, unlike asynchronous motors (ASM), they do not induce a voltage in the rotor and thus no current flows and no heat is generated in the rotor. This significantly reduces losses. Synchronous reluctance motors thus have a significantly higher efficiency, they offer energy efficiency class IE4 (Super Premium Efficiency) as standard and have a “cold” rotor in relation to the ASM, which additionally increases bearing life.

Another highly interesting motor technology is the invention of the company EMF. Here, an intelligent arrangement of permannet magnets on the rotor in interaction with the stator winding creates a gearless gearmotor. Sounds crazy, but it works. The advantages of this technology, which only the EMF company offers worldwide, are sensational:

  • The torque motor has the best efficiency worldwide (up to 98%), in practice savings of approx. 20% and more are achieved (this is extremely high).
  • The gear function between shaft and stator rotating field is absolutely loss- and backlash-free(!) (otherwise the high efficiency could not be explained, fantastic properties for any servo application of torque motors)
  • Offers the best torque-to-weight ratio, does not require cooling (IC410 only)
  • Significant improvement of control characteristics in terms of position, speed and torque (improvement up to 10-fold),
  • Provides the lowest torque ripple (again, a significant improvement, about 6 times),
  • With all these improvements, this new motor technology can be called an all-in-one solution.
